## What it is

The Vineland Social Maturity Scale assesses a person's everyday adaptive functioning, how well they manage the practical and social demands of daily life, rather than their reasoning ability. It is completed by interviewing a caregiver who knows the person well.

It yields a social age and, compared with chronological age, a social quotient. Adaptive behaviour is central to defining intellectual disability, so a measure like this usually accompanies an intelligence test.

## Who it is for

It is used across the age range, especially in the assessment of intellectual and developmental disability, where adaptive functioning must be documented alongside IQ, including for disability certification.

It is completed through a structured interview with a caregiver, by a trained clinician.

## How it is administered

The clinician interviews a caregiver about what the person typically does across areas such as self-help, communication, self-direction, occupation and socialisation, then scores each item to derive a social age and social quotient.

The materials are obtained through the publisher.

## Use in India

In India, the Indian adaptation of the VSMS by A.J. Malin (the Nagpur adaptation) is very widely used, and is a standard part of intellectual disability assessment and certification alongside an IQ test such as MISIC or the Binet-Kamat Test. The internationally published Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Vineland-3) are a separate, more recent instrument.

## Frequently asked questions

What does the VSMS measure? +

Adaptive behaviour and social maturity, how well a person manages the everyday practical and social demands of life. It gives a social age and a social quotient.

Why is adaptive behaviour assessed alongside IQ? +

Because intellectual disability is defined by deficits in both intellectual functioning and adaptive behaviour. A measure like the VSMS documents the adaptive side.

Which Vineland version is used in India? +

The Indian adaptation of the VSMS by A.J. Malin is very widely used, especially for intellectual disability assessment and certification. The Vineland-3 is a separate, newer international instrument.
