## What it is

The WISC is an individually administered test of general cognitive ability for children and adolescents, developed by David Wechsler and now published by Pearson in its fifth edition (WISC-V). It gives a Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) alongside several index scores that describe different cognitive domains.

Rather than a single number, its value lies in the profile: it can show that a child reasons well verbally but processes information slowly, or has strong visual-spatial skills but weak working memory. That profile informs learning support, diagnosis of specific learning disorders, and identification of intellectual giftedness or disability.

## What it covers

| Verbal Comprehension Index (VCI) | Verbal reasoning and knowledge |
| -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Visual Spatial Index (VSI) | Spatial and constructional reasoning |
| Fluid Reasoning Index (FRI) | Novel problem-solving |
| Working Memory Index (WMI) | Holding and manipulating information |
| Processing Speed Index (PSI) | Speed of simple visual scanning and output |
| Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) | Overall cognitive ability |

## Who it is for

It is used with children aged roughly 6 to 16 for questions about learning difficulties, attention and developmental concerns, giftedness, and intellectual disability, and as part of a fuller psychoeducational assessment.

It is administered one-to-one by a qualified psychologist trained in its use. It is not a group or online test, and a valid result depends on standardised administration and rapport with the child.

## How it is administered

The psychologist works through a series of subtests, some verbal, some involving blocks, pictures and puzzles, and some timed. Raw scores are converted to scaled scores using age norms, which combine into the index scores and the FSIQ.

Because the materials are standardised and secure, only qualified professionals may purchase and administer them. Practice or exposure to items invalidates the result, which is why the actual questions are never published.

## Use in India

In India, the WISC is used in clinics, schools and hospitals, often alongside or in place of Indian-adapted batteries. Malin's Intelligence Scale for Indian Children (MISIC) is an Indian adaptation of an earlier WISC, still widely used where Indian norms are preferred. Clinicians weigh language, schooling and cultural familiarity when choosing between the WISC and an Indian-normed test, and when interpreting scores for Indian children.

## Frequently asked questions

What does the WISC measure? +

General cognitive ability in children aged about 6 to 16\. It gives a Full Scale IQ plus index scores for verbal comprehension, visual-spatial reasoning, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed.

Can I take the WISC online or for free? +

No. The WISC is a restricted, copyrighted instrument administered one-to-one by a qualified psychologist. Any free online 'WISC test' is not the real instrument, and self-exposure to items invalidates a future assessment.

Is the WISC used in India? +

Yes, widely, in clinics, schools and hospitals. It is often considered alongside Indian-adapted tests such as Malin's Intelligence Scale for Indian Children (MISIC), depending on language, schooling and the referral question.

What is the difference between the WISC and the WAIS? +

They are the child and adult versions of the same Wechsler family. The WISC is for ages 6 to 16; the WAIS is for ages 16 and above.
