## What our clients say

I had tried several therapy sessions in the past without seeing any noticeable changes in my thought patterns. Then, I decided to give Ello Mind a try. My therapist, Teresa, is very friendly, and I was able to connect with her perspective right away. She has already helped me make a positive change during one of the lowest points in my life.

Ello Mind is a really good centre for mental health and wellness. From the very first session, they created a safe and supportive space where I felt comfortable opening up. I highly recommend Ello Mind and Ms Teresa to anyone looking for compassionate, professional, and effective therapy.

I had a great experience with Ellomind. I worked with Teresa and she is a wonderful therapist. Helped me get my thoughts sorted and gave some effective exercises that helped me on my mental wellness journey. I am giving this feedback a few months after my sessions ended and still feel great. The effects of the therapy are long lasting.

Teresa was able to correctly identify that I had issues with confidence and assertiveness using the right questions and exercises. She then taught me CBT frameworks and techniques that helped me improve my self-image. Teresa is very open to receiving feedback and integrating it into subsequent sessions.

I’ve been taking sessions at Ello Mind since 2023, and Teresa has helped me overcome many things. She doesn’t just give advice — she helps you understand yourself better. She listens patiently and really tries to understand what you’re going through. I genuinely appreciate her work and highly recommend Ello Mind.

Starting couple therapy with Teresa has been one of the best decisions for us. Therapy helped me calm down, reflect on my own patterns, and recognize how both of us were struggling and growing together. It truly brought more clarity, understanding, and peace into our relationship.

## What working with a therapist for burnout involves

Burnout counselling starts with understanding, not advice. In the first session your therapist asks how long you have felt this way, what your days look like, what has already been tried, and what is happening outside work. From there you agree on what to focus on first. Later sessions mix talking through what keeps you stuck with small, specific changes you try between sessions and review together.

Burnout treatment in therapy is practical. It covers boundaries and workload, sleep and recovery time, the perfectionism or guilt that keeps people pushing past empty, and, where it matters, how to talk to a manager or family about what needs to change. If you want the background first, our article on [what burnout means and its signs](/blog/burnout-meaning-in-malayalam/) covers the definition and symptoms in detail.

## What therapy for burnout usually involves

Therapy for burnout draws on approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). In plain terms, CBT helps you notice the thoughts that keep you overworking, such as “if I say no, they will think I cannot cope,” question them, and try a different response. Therapy also covers ways to cope with stress, solve practical problems, and use mindfulness and relaxation techniques.

ACT focuses less on arguing with difficult thoughts and more on making room for them while you act on what matters to you. A review of controlled trials found that ACT-based programmes may reduce burnout in staff across health, social care and public services, though the studies were small. Your psychologist uses what fits you, not a fixed script.

## When it is time to see someone

If several of these have lasted for weeks, it is worth talking to a psychologist

### Rest no longer restores you

A weekend off or a short holiday helps for a day, then the exhaustion is back before Monday is over.

### You have stopped caring about work you used to care about

Cynicism, dread on Sunday evening, or a flat distance from people and tasks that once mattered.

### You are working harder and getting less done

Simple tasks take longer, mistakes creep in, and you feel less effective however many hours you put in.

### It is spilling into home

Short temper with family, poor sleep, and no energy left for the people and things you love.

Not sure where you stand? Take our [burnout self-check](/tools/burnout/). It takes a few minutes and is a starting point for a conversation, not a diagnosis.

## Burnout or depression? Why it matters for treatment

The World Health Organization describes burn-out in its ICD-11 classification as an occupational phenomenon: exhaustion, growing mental distance from your job, and reduced effectiveness at work. It is tied to a role. Depression tends to reach into every part of life, including weekends, holidays and the things you used to enjoy, and can bring persistent low mood, hopelessness or changes in sleep and appetite that do not lift when work eases.

The two overlap. Research finds burnout and depression are closely linked and share features such as loss of interest and poor concentration, although they are studied as different conditions. Part of a therapist's job in the first sessions is to help you tell which you are dealing with, because the focus of treatment differs. If what you are feeling sounds more like the second description, our page on [depression treatment](/depression-treatment/) explains how that work looks. If constant worry is the bigger part, see [anxiety treatment](/anxiety-treatment/).

## Work burnout and caregiver burnout

Work burnout shows up in every kind of job: targets in IT and sales, running a small business, or working in the Gulf far from family support. Sessions look at the job itself and at what you bring to it, such as finding it hard to say no or feeling that your worth depends on output.

Burnout in caring jobs deserves its own mention. Nurses, doctors, teachers, counsellors and the many Malayali healthcare workers in the Gulf spend their days meeting other people's needs, and are often the last to admit they are running empty. If that is you, therapy is a place where you are the one being looked after, and you do not have to explain the pressures of your job from scratch.

Strictly, the WHO uses burn-out for work. Yet many people caring for an ageing parent, a child with extra needs or an unwell partner describe the same draining exhaustion, often with less recognition and no time off. Therapy for caregiver burnout makes room for the guilt and resentment carers rarely say aloud, and helps you share the load and protect some time that is yours. If tension at home is part of it, [couples counselling](/services/couples-therapy/) can help the two of you divide that load more fairly.

## Your burnout recovery plan

A typical shape, adjusted to you. Recovery is gradual, and setbacks are part of it.

1

### Map what is draining you

Your therapist helps you look at workload, control, recognition, relationships at work and at home, and your own habits of over-giving, to find where the drain is heaviest.

2

### Stabilise the basics

Sleep, breaks, meals and a few protected hours. Small, realistic changes come first, because an ambitious plan is hard to carry when you are depleted.

3

### Change what you can

Boundaries, saying no, preparing a conversation with your manager or family, and loosening the perfectionism or guilt that keeps you running past empty.

4

### Rebuild and protect

Reconnecting with what gives you energy and meaning, and an early-warning plan so you notice the slide sooner next time.

What step 3 can look like in practice: instead of quietly taking on a fifth project, you go to your manager with a short script prepared in session, such as “I can do the client report well by Friday, or the new proposal, but not both. Which matters more?” Or you protect two evenings a week with no work messages and review with your therapist what actually happened.

If you are already working with a doctor, therapy runs alongside that care. Sessions are [one-to-one online therapy](/services/individual-therapy/), 50 minutes each.

## Burnout therapy: frequently asked questions

What does a therapist for burnout actually do? +

A therapist for burnout helps you understand what has worn you down, separate burnout from other problems such as depression or anxiety, and build a practical recovery plan. Sessions combine talking through what is happening with concrete changes to boundaries, routines and the beliefs that keep you overworking.

Is burnout a medical diagnosis? +

The World Health Organization includes burn-out in ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon rather than a medical condition. It describes exhaustion, growing mental distance from your job, and reduced effectiveness at work. A psychologist can help you work out whether what you feel is burnout, or something like depression that needs a different focus.

How is burnout different from depression? +

They overlap, and a psychologist can help tell them apart. Burnout is tied to work or a draining role and often eases when that changes. Depression tends to colour the whole of life, including time away from work, and may include persistent low mood and loss of interest everywhere. If that sounds closer, see [depression treatment](/depression-treatment/).

Do I need to quit my job to recover from burnout? +

Not necessarily. Recovery is sometimes possible while staying in the job, by changing how you work, what you say yes to, and how you rest. Sometimes the work itself has to change. Your therapist helps you weigh that decision calmly instead of making it while exhausted.

Can burnout counselling help carers, not just employees? +

Yes. Strictly, the WHO uses burn-out for work, but many people looking after a parent, a child with extra needs or an unwell partner describe the same exhaustion. The work in sessions is similar: understanding the load, getting support, and protecting some time and energy for yourself.

How many sessions does burnout treatment take? +

It varies with how long you have been running on empty and how much can change around you. Your therapist suggests a plan with you after the first session, and there is no package to commit to.

Is it confidential? Will my employer know? +

Your sessions are private and confidential. ElloMind does not contact your employer, and what you share is not passed on to your workplace or family. The only exception is a serious risk to your life or someone else's, or a legal requirement such as a court order. In that case your psychologist would act to keep you safe and would talk to you first wherever possible.

How do I know if I need therapy for burnout? +

If rest and time off no longer restore you, if the exhaustion has lasted for weeks, if it is affecting your sleep, your temper at home or your work, or if you have tried to fix it alone and it keeps coming back, it is worth talking to a psychologist. You do not need to wait until you cannot function.

Can burnout turn into depression? +

Research finds burnout and depression are closely linked, and they share features such as loss of interest and trouble concentrating, although they are studied as different conditions. If burnout has gone on for a long time, or the low mood follows you into weekends and holidays, it is worth checking for depression too. A psychologist can help you tell them apart.

How long does burnout recovery take? +

There is no standard timeline. It depends on how long you have been running on empty, how severe it has become, and whether the things causing it can change. Most people notice small improvements, like better sleep or a little more patience, before they feel fully recovered, and setbacks along the way are normal. Your therapist reviews progress with you as you go.

What kind of therapy helps with burnout? +

Burnout therapy usually draws on approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), along with practical work on stress, problem-solving and boundaries. Your psychologist chooses what fits you rather than following a fixed script.

I work in healthcare or teaching. Is this for me? +

Yes. People in caring jobs, such as nurses, doctors, teachers and counsellors, often carry other people's needs all day and find it hardest to admit they are depleted. Sessions are confidential, and you do not have to explain your job's pressures from scratch.

Can I have sessions in Malayalam? +

Yes. Sessions are available in Malayalam and English, online, so you can join from home, from work, or from abroad.
