## What our clients say

I had tried several therapy sessions in the past without seeing any noticeable changes in my thought patterns. Then, I decided to give Ello Mind a try. My therapist, Teresa, is very friendly, and I was able to connect with her perspective right away. She has already helped me make a positive change during one of the lowest points in my life.

Ello Mind is a really good centre for mental health and wellness. From the very first session, they created a safe and supportive space where I felt comfortable opening up. I highly recommend Ello Mind and Ms Teresa to anyone looking for compassionate, professional, and effective therapy.

I had a great experience with Ellomind. I worked with Teresa and she is a wonderful therapist. Helped me get my thoughts sorted and gave some effective exercises that helped me on my mental wellness journey. I am giving this feedback a few months after my sessions ended and still feel great. The effects of the therapy are long lasting.

Teresa was able to correctly identify that I had issues with confidence and assertiveness using the right questions and exercises. She then taught me CBT frameworks and techniques that helped me improve my self-image. Teresa is very open to receiving feedback and integrating it into subsequent sessions.

I’ve been taking sessions at Ello Mind since 2023, and Teresa has helped me overcome many things. She doesn’t just give advice — she helps you understand yourself better. She listens patiently and really tries to understand what you’re going through. I genuinely appreciate her work and highly recommend Ello Mind.

Starting couple therapy with Teresa has been one of the best decisions for us. Therapy helped me calm down, reflect on my own patterns, and recognize how both of us were struggling and growing together. It truly brought more clarity, understanding, and peace into our relationship.

## What is premarital counselling?

Premarital counselling is couples work done before marriage instead of in a crisis. A psychologist guides the two of you through the topics that most often surprise couples later, and helps you notice where your assumptions quietly differ, so you can talk about it now rather than discover it at year three. Differences do the most damage when they surface as a shock in the middle of a fight. Bringing them into the open early, with someone neutral in the room, turns a future argument into a conversation you have already had once.

It is preparation, not repair, and it is most useful when nothing is wrong yet. It usually runs to a handful of sessions, often starting with each of you answering a short set of questions on your own, so the time is spent where you actually differ.

## Do we need it if nothing is wrong?

This is the most common hesitation, and it has the reframe backwards. Premarital counselling is most useful precisely when you are happy, because that is when you can discuss hard topics calmly instead of mid-fight. Think of it as a health check before a long journey, not a repair after a breakdown. A difference about money or in-laws can be named as information rather than an accusation.

It is also where quiet cold feet get a hearing. Pre-wedding jitters, second thoughts, or a worry you have not said out loud are all fine reasons to come in. For someone in an arranged match who has met their partner only a handful of times, a neutral space to ask the awkward questions is often more useful than any amount of family advice.

## Who it is for

### Engaged or planning to marry

Love match or otherwise. Even partners of many years usually find one topic they have skirted, most often money or where they will live.

### An arranged match still getting acquainted

Guided talks cover the practical ground, family, finances, living arrangements, without it feeling like an interrogation.

### Interfaith or inter-community couples

The work is not whose tradition wins. It is agreeing, between yourselves, how you will handle two families' expectations kindly.

### Second marriages, and long-distance or NRI couples

Where past experience, children from before, or two different countries need a plan rather than an assumption.

## What you will talk about

The areas where couples most often assume they agree, and later find they did not

Money and who manages it Family and in-laws Children: whether and when Roles and expectations at home Careers and relocation Intimacy How you handle conflict Values and faith, handled neutrally

## Questions to ask before marriage

You do not have to agree on every answer. The point is to know the answers, and to notice where you differ while it is still a conversation.

### Money

Will we pool our money or keep it separate, and who manages it? Do either of us have loans the other should know about? Do we support parents or siblings, and how much?

### Family and living

Will we live with parents, near them, or on our own, and do we both actually want that? What do our families expect, and where do we draw a line together, kindly?

### Children

Do we both want children, and roughly when? Whose work flexes if we do? How do we each imagine raising them?

### Careers and moving

Whose job leads if one of us has to relocate? Are we open to another city or country, and for how long?

### Home and roles

How do we split housework and decisions? What did each of us grow up assuming a husband or a wife simply does?

### Values and faith

How much does religion or community feature in daily life, and how will we handle it if we differ? There is no right answer here, only a shared one.

### Conflict

How does each of us behave when angry? Do we pull family into our disagreements? Is there anything either of us would consider a dealbreaker?

### The future

In five years, what does a good marriage look like to each of us?

For an arranged match still getting acquainted, add the practical ones early: what each family is expecting and by when, whether you will live with in-laws at first, and what financial responsibilities to parents you are each carrying in. These are awkward to start alone and much easier with someone guiding them.

## Does premarital counselling actually work?

Couples who do some form of structured preparation tend to begin marriage with [better communication](/blog/communication-in-a-relationship/) and greater satisfaction than couples who do not. It is not a guarantee, and it does not remove conflict, because no marriage is conflict-free. What it gives you is a shared language and a habit of talking things through early, which is exactly the habit that struggling couples most often wish they had built sooner. The benefit people describe is rarely "we agree on everything now". It is "we know how to have the hard conversation without it turning into a wound".

If, as these conversations open up, you find you feel pressured into the marriage, controlled, frightened, or unsafe with your partner or either family, that matters more than any date already fixed, and you are allowed to slow things down. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services. For confidential support, see our [crisis and support helplines](/crisis-helpline/).

## Frequently asked questions

Is premarital counselling only for couples who are having problems? +

No, the opposite. It is preparation, not repair, and it is most useful when things are good, because that is when you can discuss hard topics calmly rather than in a fight.

What do you talk about in premarital counselling? +

The usual areas are money, family and in-laws (including joint households), children, expectations and roles, careers and relocation, intimacy, how each of you handles conflict, and how much faith or community features in your life. Your psychologist focuses on the ones that matter most to you.

What questions should we ask each other before marriage? +

Cover money, where you will live and how you will handle both families, whether and when you want children, whose career leads if one of you moves, intimacy, how you each behave when angry, and what a good marriage looks like to each of you in five years. The section above lists these in full.

How many sessions do we need? +

Usually a handful, done as a short series in the months before the wedding. Your psychologist suggests a sensible number rather than locking you into a package.

Is it suitable for an arranged marriage? +

Yes, and it is especially useful there. When two people are still getting to know each other, guided conversations about family expectations, living arrangements, finances and timelines make the early days far smoother.

When should we start before the wedding? +

A few months ahead is ideal, enough time to have the conversations without the wedding rush on top. It is still worth doing close to the date or in the first year, and for an arranged match, as soon as the match is fixed.

Can I come alone if my partner is unsure? +

Yes. One of you can begin alone, either to think things through or to feel out whether it will help before inviting your partner in. It often becomes easier to join together once the first step is taken.

Can we join from different cities or countries? +

Yes. Sessions are online, so a couple separated by a Gulf posting, studies, or work abroad can attend together from two places. For NRI Malayali couples this is often the only practical way.

Is premarital counselling available in Malayalam? +

Yes. At ElloMind you can do it entirely in Malayalam with a psychologist who speaks it, or in English. Being able to talk about money, family and intimacy in your own language makes the honest conversations much easier.

What is the difference between premarital counselling and couples therapy? +

They are the same kind of work at different times. Premarital counselling prepares a couple before marriage; [couples therapy](/services/couples-therapy) helps a couple already facing difficulty. Both are guided conversations with a psychologist.

We are having second thoughts. Should we still come? +

Yes. Pre-wedding jitters, doubts, or a worry you have not said out loud are good reasons to talk to someone, and it is always alright to slow things down.

Is it religious? +

No. ElloMind premarital counselling is psychological and non-religious. We help you talk about your own values, including how much faith or community features in your life, without prescribing any.

Do we need a medical or genetic test too? +

That is a separate, sensible thing some couples do, and it is a doctor's domain, not ours. Premarital counselling is talk therapy about the relationship; for health screening, see a physician.

How much does it cost, and is it confidential? +

It is the same clear per-session price as any other session, with no package to commit to upfront, and a single session comes with the option to pay after it; you can [view the current fee](/pricing?tab=couples). Your sessions are private, and what is said in the room stays there.
