How to calm an anxiety attack

A short explainer from our psychologists

Anxiety Attacks: Why You Feel It and How to Stop It — ElloMind

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is your body's alarm system doing its job at the wrong time. A little worry is normal and even useful. It becomes a problem when the alarm stays on, when worry, fear, or physical tension start interfering with your sleep, work, relationships, or daily life, and it does not settle on its own.

You do not need a diagnosis to get help. If any of the signs below sound familiar and have lasted for a few weeks, therapy can make a real difference.

Common signs of anxiety

Constant worry you can't switch offRacing heart, tight chest, or trouble breathingRestlessness or feeling on edgeTrouble sleeping or a racing mind at nightAvoiding people, places, or situationsIrritability, or difficulty concentrating

How anxiety therapy works

The most effective treatment for anxiety is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Your psychologist helps you spot the thoughts that quietly fuel worry, test them against what is actually true, and replace them with grounding and coping skills you can use in real life. For panic and phobias, gentle, gradual exposure helps feared situations slowly lose their power.

Understand your anxiety and what keeps it goingLearn grounding techniques for panic and racing thoughtsGently face avoided situations at your own paceBuild habits that protect your sleep and calm your body

Sessions are 50 minutes, over encrypted video, in Malayalam or English. New to therapy? Here is what to expect in your first session, and why the bond with your therapist matters more than any technique.

ഉത്കണ്ഠ, നിങ്ങളുടെ ഭാഷയിൽ

Anxiety and social anxiety, explained in Malayalam

What our clients say

Starting couple therapy with Teresa has been one of the best decisions for us. Therapy helped me calm down, reflect on my own patterns, and recognize how both of us were struggling and growing together. It truly brought more clarity, understanding, and peace into our relationship.

I had tried several therapy sessions in the past without seeing any noticeable changes in my thought patterns. Then, I decided to give Ello Mind a try. My therapist, Teresa, is very friendly, and I was able to connect with her perspective right away. She has already helped me make a positive change during one of the lowest points in my life.

I’ve been attending therapy sessions with Hyma ma’am, and the experience has been incredibly positive. She creates a safe and comfortable environment, allowing me to open up and explore my thoughts at my own pace. Her approach is both professional and compassionate. I’m truly grateful for the progress I’ve made with her guidance.

I had a great experience with Ellomind. I worked with Teresa and she is a wonderful therapist. Helped me get my thoughts sorted and gave some effective exercises that helped me on my mental wellness journey. I am giving this feedback a few months after my sessions ended and still feel great. The effects of the therapy are long lasting.

Teresa was able to correctly identify that I had issues with confidence and assertiveness using the right questions and exercises. She then taught me CBT frameworks and techniques that helped me improve my self-image. Teresa is very open to receiving feedback and integrating it into subsequent sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Anxiety is most often treated with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), the most evidence-based approach for anxiety disorders. Your psychologist helps you notice the thought patterns that fuel worry, test them against reality, and build practical coping and grounding skills. For panic and phobias, gradual exposure is added so feared situations slowly lose their grip.

If worry, fear, or physical symptoms like a racing heart or trouble sleeping are interfering with your work, relationships, or daily life, and it has lasted for weeks, therapy can help. You do not need a formal diagnosis to start. You can also take our free anxiety self-check first.

Yes. Research consistently finds online therapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person sessions for anxiety. Many people actually find it easier to open up about anxiety from a familiar, private space, without the added stress of travelling to a clinic.

Not necessarily. Many people manage anxiety well with therapy alone. Our psychologists do not prescribe medication, but if they feel it could help, they will guide you toward a psychiatrist for that conversation. Therapy and medication can also work well together.

Anxiety is ongoing worry or unease, often about the future. A panic attack is a sudden, intense surge of fear with strong physical symptoms, a pounding heart, tight chest, trouble breathing, that peaks within minutes. Therapy helps with both, and specific techniques exist to shorten and reduce panic attacks.

Yes. All our psychologists speak Malayalam and English fluently, and most clients use a natural mix of both. Describing anxiety in your mother tongue often makes it easier to access what you are really feeling. See online counselling in Malayalam.

An individual session is ₹1,499, or from ₹1,049 per session with a multi-session plan. Each session is 50 minutes. You pay after your session on a sliding scale. View all plans.

Every psychologist at ElloMind holds a recognised master's degree in clinical or counselling psychology. Our anxiety specialists use evidence-based methods including CBT, exposure therapy, and trauma-informed approaches. View therapist profiles.
