Therapy cost by city and region
Price tracks city size and therapist experience more than which state you are in. Metros cost the most, tier-2 cities and Kerala’s towns sit in the middle, and online therapy is cheaper almost everywhere. Granular state-by-state pricing is not well documented in India, so a city-tier view is the practical way to read it.

What the main online platforms charge
Prices differ by platform, therapist seniority, and business model (pay-per-session versus subscription). Here is what the widely used Indian online therapy services list in 2026.
Two platforms do not fit a per-session range: MindPeers runs on a subscription (about ₹350 per month), and LYFsmile bills by the minute (about ₹30 per minute). Platform prices as listed or reported in 2026 (see References); prices change often, so check each provider for current rates.
Therapy cost in Kerala, and Malayalam therapy
In Kerala, an individual therapy session usually costs ₹800 to ₹3,000, with ₹800 to ₹2,500 typical in Kochi. Therapists in the bigger urban centres (Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode) tend to charge more than smaller towns because of higher overheads. Couples and family sessions run higher, often ₹1,500 to ₹5,000.
| Where in Kerala | Cost per session |
|---|---|
| Kochi | ₹800 – ₹2,500 |
| Thiruvananthapuram | ₹800 – ₹2,500 |
| Kozhikode | ₹800 – ₹2,500 |
| Thrissur and smaller towns | ₹500 – ₹1,500 |
| Online Malayalam therapy | ₹800 – ₹2,000 |
| ElloMind (Malayalam, online) | ₹800 – ₹1,499+ |
Two things make Kerala different. First, most people want a therapist who speaks Malayalam and understands the family and cultural context, which used to mean travelling to a city clinic. Second, online Malayalam therapy has removed that travel, so someone in a small town, or a Malayali in the Gulf, can see a Malayalam-speaking psychologist for the same fee as someone in Kochi. Online Malayalam sessions typically run ₹800 to ₹2,000.
This is what ElloMind is built for. Every session is online, in Malayalam or English, with a qualified psychologist, from ₹800 to ₹1,499 and above. No travel and no city premium.
Why it costs what it does
If a fee looks high, it usually reflects real differences, not overcharging. A session pays for a qualified professional’s time and training, not just the hour. Here is what actually explains the gap between one therapist and another.
- Experience and qualificationA senior clinical psychologist with years of practice charges more than an early-career counsellor.
- SpecialisationTrauma, couples, and child therapy usually cost more than general individual therapy.
- CityMetro clinics (Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Kochi) cost more than tier-2 and tier-3 towns.
- Online vs in-personOnline sessions skip travel and clinic overheads, so they usually cost less.
- Session lengthMost sessions run 45 to 60 minutes. Shorter check-ins sometimes cost less.
- Single session vs a planBuying a plan of several sessions lowers the price per session.
Is therapy worth the cost?
This is the real question behind the price, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch. A session fee pays for a trained professional’s full attention, a private and confidential space, and evidence-based help, not just an hour of conversation. Research consistently finds that therapy helps with common concerns like anxiety, depression, and relationship stress, and that online therapy is about as effective as in-person.
That does not make it cheap, and no one should pretend the cost is nothing. The fairest way to find out whether it is worth it for you is to try a single session before committing to more. One session is a small, bounded cost, and it tells you more than any guide can about whether this therapist and this process actually help you. If you are nervous, here is what to expect in a first session.
Online vs in-person: which costs less?
Online therapy is usually the cheaper option. There is no travel, no clinic rent built into the fee, and more therapists to choose from, which keeps prices competitive. Research generally finds online therapy as effective as in-person sessions for common concerns like anxiety, depression, and relationship stress. For most people starting out, a good online session with a qualified psychologist is both the more affordable and the more convenient choice.
How to make therapy affordable
If the standard price is a stretch, you have real options, and using them is completely normal.
- Start with one session. You do not have to commit to a course. Book one, see if it helps, and decide from there.
- Choose online. Online sessions skip travel and clinic overheads, so they usually cost less than in-person.
- Ask about a lower or sliding-scale fee. Many therapists offer reduced rates, and early-career psychologists under supervision cost less.
- Use a plan. If you know you want several sessions, a plan lowers the price per session.
- Look at free and low-cost services. Government hospitals, university clinics, and the Tele-MANAS helpline are genuinely free or heavily subsidised (see below).
- Check your insurance. If your policy includes an OPD benefit, therapy may be partly covered (see below).

If cost is the thing standing between you and support, these are real options. We would rather you get help you can afford than not at all.
- Government hospitals and institutes. Psychiatry departments at government medical colleges and institutes such as NIMHANS offer heavily subsidised care, often ₹200 to ₹500, though waiting times can be long.
- University psychology clinics. Many universities run low-cost clinics where trainee therapists see clients under qualified supervision.
Tele-MANAS, the national helpline.India’s government mental health helpline is free, round the clock, and available in many languages. Call 14416. For crisis support and more numbers, see our crisis helpline page.
Does health insurance cover therapy in India?
Partly, and the detail matters. Since the Mental Healthcare Act 2017 and the IRDAI circular in 2022, every health insurance policy sold in India must cover mental illness on the same basis as physical illness. But there is an important catch.
- The mandate mainly covers inpatient care, meaning hospitalisation and day-care treatment for a psychiatric condition.
- Regular outpatient therapy sessions are covered only if your policy specifically includes an OPD benefit, and most policies do not.
- Waiting periods for pre-existing mental health conditions are now capped at three years, and many newer plans are shorter.
Check whether your policy has an OPD benefit. If it does, keep your receipts and prescriptions. If it does not, therapy sessions are usually paid out of pocket.

Common questions about therapy cost
In 2026, most therapy sessions in India cost ₹500 to ₹2,500, and senior clinical psychologists can charge up to ₹3,500. Online sessions tend to sit at the lower end of that range.
Usually, yes. Online therapy skips travel and clinic rent, so it often costs less than an in-person session in a metro city, with the same quality of care from a qualified psychologist.
Insurance must cover mental illness on the same basis as physical illness, but this mainly applies to hospitalisation. Regular outpatient therapy sessions are covered only if your policy specifically includes an OPD benefit, and most policies do not.
If you go weekly, that is about four sessions a month. At a ₹1,499 standard rate that is roughly ₹6,000, and plans bring it down. Many people start with one or two sessions and adjust from there.
For most people who stay with it, yes, and research supports that for anxiety, depression, and relationship concerns. The fee pays for a trained professional's time, a confidential space, and evidence-based help. The honest way to judge it for yourself is to try a single session before committing further; it is a small, bounded cost that tells you whether this therapist and approach help you.
A session fee pays for a qualified professional's years of training, their time preparing between sessions, and a private, confidential space, not just the hour itself. Senior clinical psychologists and specialists charge more; early-career therapists and online sessions cost less.
You still have real options. Government hospitals and university clinics offer care from ₹100 to ₹500, Tele-MANAS (14416) is a free national helpline, and many therapists offer sliding-scale or reduced fees. Starting with a single online session also keeps the cost small and bounded.
A lower price is not a red flag on its own. What matters is that the therapist is properly qualified and trained. Very low fees sometimes mean a trainee counsellor, which can be fine for general support but less suited to complex concerns.
In Kerala, individual therapy usually costs ₹800 to ₹3,000, with ₹800 to ₹2,500 typical in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode. Online Malayalam therapy runs about ₹800 to ₹2,000, the same fee wherever you live. ElloMind sessions are ₹800 to ₹1,499 and above.
An ElloMind session is ₹800 to ₹1,499 and above, with a standard rate of ₹1,499 for individuals, ₹1,999 for couples, and ₹1,799 for teens. Plans save 10 to 30 percent.
